Andrew Cuomo Warns of Potential Setbacks for Crypto Regulation After Midterms

Andrew Cuomo, former New York Governor and current board member of crypto exchange OKX, has expressed concerns that the recent regulatory gains in the cryptocurrency sector may be at risk if Democrats win control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking to Bloomberg, Cuomo highlighted that the current regulatory framework relies heavily on agency rules, which he considers less stable than formal legislation.

Cuomo pointed out that the Senate recently blocked the Clarity Act, a proposed bill aimed at establishing federal regulations for the crypto market, with a vote of 49 to 50. He attributed the failure of the bill to election-year politics rather than significant ideological differences among lawmakers. Cuomo believes that voters will favor Democrats for their perceived balance rather than enthusiasm for their agenda.

As the midterms approach, Cuomo is hopeful that the lame-duck Congress will pass the Clarity Act before the end of the year, but he acknowledges that a Democratic majority could complicate the bill's chances. He also noted that while Democrats are not inherently opposed to crypto, a lack of organized support from the crypto community has hindered legislative progress.
