Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5.5, Enhancing Performance and Reducing Costs

On September 28, Anthropic unveiled Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family. This new model is designed to be a faster and more cost-effective alternative for coding, document creation, and everyday tasks.

Claude Sonnet 5.5 reportedly generates output over 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30% less per task. This efficiency is attributed to its requirement for fewer tokens to accomplish the same tasks, maintaining the token pricing at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 as a complement to Claude Opus 5.5, which is tailored for complex tasks requiring sustained judgment. In comparative evaluations, Sonnet 5.5 demonstrated significant improvements, scoring 70.6% on the Terminal-Bench 4.0, outperforming Sonnet 5 significantly and nearly tying with Opus 5.5 on the GDPval-AA knowledge work test.

Notably, Sonnet 5.5 has shown marked advancements in coding tasks, achieving a score increase of roughly 10 points over its predecessor while costing significantly less per task. It is also the first model in the Sonnet series to incorporate advanced cybersecurity safeguards, enhancing its capability to handle high-risk requests.
