Aptos Develops AI Agent Infrastructure for GPU Rentals and Stablecoin Payments

Cryptelio Editorial Published 20 Sep 2026 · 17:16 UTC

Aptos is advancing its capabilities for autonomous agent commerce by developing a suite of tools that enable AI agents to rent idle GPU capacity and settle transactions using stablecoins. Central to this initiative is the x402 payment protocol, which allows for rapid, cost-effective micropayments between machines.

The x402 protocol, launched in May 2025, has already facilitated over 100 million payments, with USDC accounting for more than 99% of these transactions. The protocol is designed to support payments per API call, data feed request, or compute cycle, addressing the need for fast and programmable payment solutions in AI applications.

Aptos CEO Avery Ching highlighted that stablecoins like USDC provide the necessary programmable spending controls and audit trails required for enterprise-level deployments. Currently, the stablecoin market cap on the Aptos network is approximately $1.9 billion.

In partnership with io.net, Aptos introduced the Agent Cloud platform, allowing AI agents to autonomously discover and rent GPU resources through smart contracts, with transactions handled in USDC.

To bolster this initiative, the Aptos Foundation and Aptos Labs have committed $50 million towards the development of AI agent tools and infrastructure, supporting projects like Decibel, which focuses on on-chain order books, and Shelby, aimed at decentralized storage solutions for agent workloads.

New Insights on AI and Data Center Power Demand

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has projected that global data center power consumption will more than double by 2030, increasing from approximately 415 TWh in 2024 to around 945 TWh. This surge is expected to account for nearly 3% of all global electricity demand.

Data center electricity usage has been growing at an annual rate of about 12% since 2019, with expectations to accelerate to roughly 15% per year through the end of the decade, primarily driven by AI workloads.

The United States and China are forecasted to account for nearly 80% of the total increase in data center electricity demand, with the US alone expected to add approximately 240 TWh by 2030, representing a 130% increase from 2024 levels.

Investment in data centers reached about $500 billion in 2024, nearly double the amount from 2022. The IEA anticipates that renewable energy sources will meet about 50% of the additional data center demand by 2030.

However, the construction of new transmission lines and generation capacity often takes significantly longer than building data centers, leading to stress on existing power grids, particularly in regions like Northern Virginia and central Texas.

As data centers consume a larger share of new power capacity, industries like Bitcoin mining may face increased competition for resources, prompting some miners to pivot towards AI hosting and high-performance computing.
