ASML Reports Minimal European Sales, Highlights Semiconductor Manufacturing Gap

ASML, the Dutch company renowned for producing the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing machines, has disclosed that it generates a mere 1.6% of its total sales from Europe. In its fiscal year 2025, ASML reported €32.7 billion in net sales, with only €524 million coming from the entire EMEA region, and a strikingly low €4.7 million from the Netherlands, its home country.

ASML's executive vice president, Frank Heemskerk, emphasized that the lack of new semiconductor fabrication plants in Europe is a primary reason for the company's minimal sales in the region. This situation underscores a significant structural issue in European semiconductor manufacturing, where the continent has not kept pace with the demand for advanced chip-making technology.

While ASML's sales in Asia, particularly in China, Taiwan, and South Korea, have flourished, the company faces challenges due to U.S. export restrictions that limit its ability to sell its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems to Chinese customers. As a result, ASML anticipates a decline in its China sales to about 20% of revenue by 2026.

The European Chips Act, introduced in 2023, aims to double the continent's share of global semiconductor production to 20% by 2030. However, ASML's sales figures suggest that achieving this target will be a formidable challenge, given the current lack of advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities in Europe.
