Bill Gates Urges Governments to Regulate AI to Prevent Wealth Disparity

Bill Gates has raised concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) will primarily benefit the wealthiest individuals unless governments take action. Speaking at the Gates Foundation’s annual Goalkeepers Report, he emphasized the need for equitable access to AI technologies.

Gates pointed out that market forces tend to direct the best tools toward those who can afford them, leaving those with the greatest needs without power over investment decisions. He outlined three key demands in the report:

• AI tools should be available in all languages, as over 90% of early model data is English-based.
• Countries must have control over their own data management.
• Professionals such as doctors, farmers, and teachers should be able to test and adapt AI tools rather than just using pre-packaged solutions.

The Gates Foundation has committed at least $1 billion over the next two years to support education, health, and agriculture initiatives. Chief Executive Mark Suzman described this funding as a necessary down payment, highlighting the significant cuts to global health budgets by governments.

Gates also issued a 12 to 18-month deadline for governments to act on these issues. His remarks coincide with ongoing debates within the AI industry about the potential risks of rapid advancements, as some researchers advocate for a slowdown in AI development to address safety concerns.
