Brad Lightcap Leaves OpenAI After Eight Years to Pursue New Venture

Brad Lightcap, a longtime executive at OpenAI, has confirmed his exit from the company after eight years to embark on a new venture. His departure adds to a series of high-profile exits from the artificial intelligence firm, which is preparing for a potential initial public offering.

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and played a crucial role in establishing its finance, legal, and business operations. He served as the chief operating officer until April 2024, when he transitioned to a special projects role. In his farewell message shared on X, Lightcap expressed gratitude for his time at OpenAI, stating, "I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of the last decade pursuing our mission and building this company. Sitting here today, mission success feels within sight. It has been the honor of my life to help bring us to this point, and to do it alongside all of you."

CEO Sam Altman publicly acknowledged Lightcap's contributions, emphasizing his pivotal role in the company's journey. Lightcap will remain available for a few weeks to assist the team during the transition.

His exit follows several other senior departures this year, including Fidji Simo, who left due to health reasons, and Chloé Bakalar, the company's ethicist. These changes come as OpenAI prepares for a potential stock market debut, having submitted a confidential S-1 registration statement to the SEC in June.
