Cboe Options Exchange Introduces Early Trading Hours for Select Stocks

The Cboe Options Exchange is set to extend its trading hours, allowing pre-market trading sessions for select single-stock equity options beginning on August 17. This new schedule will enable trading from 7:30 AM to 9:25 AM ET, two hours earlier than the traditional opening time.

This initiative marks a significant change in the U.S. options market, as it is the first instance of a U.S. exchange permitting single-stock equity options to trade outside the standard hours of 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET. The new trading structure includes a morning Global Trading Hours (GTH) session and a brief curb session extending trading until 4:15 PM ET.

Initially, around 20 of the most actively traded stocks will be available during these early hours, including all seven members of the so-called Magnificent 7: Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Meta Platforms, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, along with other notable names like AMD and Palantir.

This change is particularly beneficial for options traders who have historically faced delays in reacting to market-moving information. For instance, if a company like Nvidia issues guidance at 8:00 AM ET, equity traders can adjust their positions immediately, while options traders have had to wait until the market opens at 9:30 AM ET. The new early trading hours will significantly reduce this gap, allowing for more timely hedging and trading strategies.

Institutional traders may find the new hours especially advantageous, as the 7:30 AM start aligns with European market hours, facilitating cross-border portfolio management.
