Family of Crypto Worker Held Hostage in France for €40,000 Transfer

In a shocking incident in northern France, a family was held hostage by four masked intruders who forced the father, an IT worker in the cryptocurrency sector, to transfer €40,000 in digital assets. The attack occurred early on September 20 in Vendin-le-Vieil, where the intruders bound the family with tape and threatened them for several hours.

The attackers entered the home around 4 a.m., demanding the father's identification details and access codes to his cryptocurrency holdings. During the ordeal, the 12-year-old daughter was reportedly struck in the face, resulting in minor injuries for both her and her father. After the intruders fled, the family managed to free themselves and received treatment for shock from firefighters.

The Béthune prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on charges of unlawful confinement and organized gang extortion. Local police are collaborating with France’s anti-cybercrime office to track down the suspects, who remain at large.

This incident is part of a disturbing trend in France, where violent crimes related to cryptocurrency are on the rise. According to reports, there have been over 70 documented violent incidents linked to cryptocurrency in the first eight months of 2026 alone, with many of these attacks targeting family members of crypto holders rather than the holders themselves.
