Florida Care Manager Charged with Stealing $100,000 from Dementia Patients

A Florida care manager has been accused of draining nearly $100,000 from the bank accounts of two dementia patients under her supervision. Megan Elizabeth Bernat, 46, from Port St. Lucie, reportedly used her access as a case manager at MorseLife to make unauthorized mobile payments to her personal credit card.

According to West Palm Beach police, Bernat executed 55 payments totaling approximately $68,540 from one woman's TD Bank account between February 2023 and June 2025. The victim, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, was unable to authorize these transactions. Additionally, a second victim, a 92-year-old man with dementia, had around $31,295 transferred from his Wells Fargo account through 30 payments from May 2023 to April 2024, with six transactions occurring after his death on March 15, 2024.

Bernat was arrested in September 2025 on charges of elderly exploitation and money laundering related to the first victim and again in July 2026 for charges involving the deceased patient. She has pleaded not guilty in the case concerning the deceased resident.
