Inner Circle Esports Defeats Team Vitality in BLAST Open Porto Upset

Inner Circle Esports, a Ukrainian CS2 roster with limited LAN experience, has pulled off a remarkable upset by defeating one of the most decorated teams in competitive Counter-Strike, Team Vitality. The match took place on August 27 during the upper bracket quarterfinals of the BLAST Open Porto 2026 group stage in Copenhagen, a tournament boasting a total prize pool of $1.1 million.

The victory came as Inner Circle, who qualified through the RES Showdown 4 Europe qualifier in July, took the first map, Anubis, with a score of 13-8. They followed this with a strong performance on the second map, closing out the series without dropping a single map. The roster, consisting of cptkurtka023, Dawy, headtr1ck, onic, and zeRRoFIX, played with an aggressive confidence characteristic of teams that have nothing to lose.

Team Vitality, however, was not at full strength. Star AWPer William “mezii” Merriman was absent due to paternity leave, with Justinas “jL” Lekavičius stepping in as a substitute. This left a lineup of apEX, flameZ, jL, ropz, and ZywOo, which struggled to find its rhythm.

Prior to this tournament, Vitality had already faced challenges, suffering a quarterfinal exit against Team Spirit at the 2026 Esports World Cup. This recent loss raises concerns about a pattern of early exits from premier events, contrasting sharply with their reputation as multiple-time BLAST champions.

While this defeat does not eliminate Vitality from the tournament, it forces them into a more challenging path through the lower bracket. Meanwhile, Inner Circle advances in Group B, riding a wave of momentum and confidence as they continue their journey in the tournament, which runs from August 26 through September 6.
