Iran's IRGC Claims Downing of US MQ-9 Reaper Drone Near Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has claimed responsibility for bringing down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone east of the Strait of Hormuz. The incident, reported by Iranian state media on August 31, 2026, adds to a series of similar claims made by Iran throughout the year, coinciding with heightened military tensions between Iran and the United States.

The MQ-9 Reaper, a key asset in US surveillance and strike operations, is valued at approximately $30 million. Reports indicate that the US has lost around 30 of these drones in the region in 2026, totaling nearly $900 million in losses. The IRGC attributed the successful shootdown to a new air-defense system, possibly linked to a mobile platform named Arash-e Kamangir, introduced earlier this year.

While the IRGC's claims have not been independently verified, the incident underscores the ongoing military friction in the region, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported.
