OKX Limits AI Model Access for Hong Kong Employees Following Account Suspension

OKX, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has implemented restrictions on the use of Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, for its employees based in Hong Kong. This decision follows a temporary suspension of the company's corporate account, which has since been restored.

According to reports, the restriction was enacted in early August after it was discovered that access to Claude by certain employees did not fully comply with Anthropic’s geographic access policies. OKX stated that it would limit Claude access for Hong Kong employees as needed and redirect their AI requests to alternative models.

Anthropic prohibits access to Claude in Hong Kong and mainland China, prompting OKX to remind employees traveling through these regions that attempts to access Claude via virtual private networks would not be supported. Despite these restrictions, OKX has emphasized the importance of AI proficiency in employee performance evaluations and encourages the integration of AI tools into daily workflows.

The exchange reportedly spends between $6 million and $8 million each month on various large language model providers, indicating a significant investment in AI technology. While employees have access to both Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Claude is perceived internally as having a more substantial impact on productivity.

This situation reflects broader challenges related to geographic restrictions imposed by AI vendors, as other companies, including Goldman Sachs, have also limited access to Claude for employees in Hong Kong. The ongoing competition between U.S. and Chinese firms in AI development further complicates these dynamics.
