OPEC Cuts 2026 Oil Demand Growth Forecast for Fifth Consecutive Month

OPEC has once again revised its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2026, cutting it to 380,000 barrels per day from the previous estimate of 580,000 bpd. This marks the fifth consecutive monthly downgrade since February, with the cumulative reduction amounting to approximately 1 million bpd, or a 72% decrease from the initial projection of 1.38 million bpd.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving Iran, have significantly impacted energy markets, constraining supply and pushing Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel. This price level is likely to hinder consumption, especially in price-sensitive regions such as Asia-Pacific and China, the world's largest crude importer.

OPEC's September report estimates average global oil demand for 2026 at around 105.84 million bpd. In contrast, the International Energy Agency has a more pessimistic view, predicting an outright decline in demand this year.

Despite the bleak near-term outlook, OPEC has raised its demand growth forecast for 2027 to 2.36 million bpd, anticipating a rebound once geopolitical tensions ease and the impact of high prices diminishes.

The persistent downgrades pose a credibility challenge for OPEC, as market participants may begin to discount future forecasts. The high Brent crude prices, while beneficial for revenue, could also exacerbate demand destruction, complicating the market landscape.
