Political Opposition Grows Against AI Data Centers Ahead of 2026 Midterms

A Gallup poll released on May 13, 2026, indicates that a significant majority of Americans, 71%, oppose the construction of AI data centers in their communities. This sentiment transcends party lines, with 75% of Democrats and approximately 63% of Republicans expressing disapproval.

The push for AI infrastructure, supported by major companies such as OpenAI, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft, is estimated to cost around $600 billion. In the first three months of 2026 alone, local opposition has successfully blocked or delayed over 75 data center projects, collectively valued at $130 billion.

According to a POLITICO analysis, more than 200 data centers are currently under construction in competitive House districts, placing this contentious issue directly in the hands of candidates vying for election. At least eight local ballot measures related to data center development are scheduled for a vote in November 2026, signaling a shift from grassroots protests to formal political action.

In response to growing opposition, candidates are adapting their platforms. For instance, Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong has proposed a statewide moratorium on new data center projects. Meanwhile, Ohio's Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has suggested that any new developments should include benefits for local residents, such as free electricity and reduced property taxes.

In Michigan, the controversy surrounding an OpenAI and Oracle project in Saline Township has become a focal point for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Political action committees linked to the AI industry are already investing in competitive districts to mitigate voter resistance, as the divide between Democratic and Republican voters on this issue continues to widen.
