Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Missiles Amid Rising Regional Tensions

On September 24, Saudi Arabia's air defenses shot down six ballistic missiles fired by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group, aimed at the Red Sea port city of Yanbu and the southwestern city of Taif. Fortunately, there were no reported damages or casualties, but the incident marks a significant escalation in ongoing cross-border tensions.

The missile intercepts triggered emergency alerts across several major Saudi cities, including Jeddah, Mecca, Tabuk, and Yanbu, before civil defense authorities declared an all-clear. Yanbu is particularly critical as it serves as one of Saudi Arabia’s main oil-export terminals, providing an alternative route for crude oil exports, especially during disruptions in the Persian Gulf.

This incident follows a similar missile attempt targeting Riyadh just five days prior, indicating a pattern of increasing aggression from the Houthis. On the same day as the intercepts, the Houthis also claimed responsibility for launching numerous missiles and drones at Saudi military sites in Jazan province, which borders Yemen.

The threat to Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks has forced major shipping companies to reroute, adding considerable time and costs to voyages between Asia and Europe. The potential for further attacks raises concerns about the security of Saudi oil supplies, which could have significant implications for global energy markets.

In response to the heightened tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of troops to Saudi Arabia to protect the Yanbu oil infrastructure, including a crucial refinery and the East-West oil pipeline. This military presence aims to bolster security amid fears that ongoing hostilities could disrupt operations.
