SoFi's Tokenized Deposits Challenge Banks Amid Stablecoin Competition

Cryptelio Editorial Published 26 Oct 2026 · 19:45 UTC

SoFi Technologies has launched a new product called SoFi Earn (SOFIE), which offers interest-bearing tokenized deposits that could intensify competition between traditional banks and stablecoin issuers. Varun Datta, founder and CEO of Truth Ventures, highlighted that this move allows consumers to earn 4.40% APY on digital dollars while retaining the flexibility to use their funds for crypto transactions and blockchain transfers.

The tokenized deposits come with FDIC insurance up to applicable limits and can be converted into SoFiUSD at a 1:1 ratio. Datta emphasized the importance of consumer understanding regarding the differences in protections and interest applicability between bank deposits and stablecoins. He stated, “The problem is that the customer needs to understand what happens when they go from a bank deposit to a stablecoin.”

Datta further noted that while yield is attractive, it is not the sole factor for payment adoption; lower costs, reliable transfers, and practical spending options are also crucial. He suggested that startups could develop services to bridge bank accounts and wallets, aiding compliance and facilitating cross-border payments, but their success will hinge on addressing operational challenges and ensuring sustainable revenue.
