SpaceX to Build World's Largest Spaceport in Louisiana with $100 Billion Investment

SpaceX is set to invest $100 billion to construct the largest spaceport globally on the Louisiana coast, as confirmed by the company and state officials. The new facility, known as Starbase Louisiana, will be located in Vermilion Parish and is designed to support thousands of launches each year.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first flight operations anticipated as early as 2029. The project is projected to generate approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average salary of $92,600, significantly higher than the local average wage. Additionally, it is expected to create over 8,100 indirect jobs, bringing the total to more than 11,100 new opportunities in the Acadiana region.

Governor Jeff Landry hailed the announcement as a pivotal moment for Louisiana, stating that it pushes the state beyond $250 billion in new investments and positions it at the forefront of aerospace development. He expressed gratitude to Elon Musk and the SpaceX team for their commitment to the state.

Elon Musk emphasized the transformative vision behind the project, stating that SpaceX aims to make space travel as routine as air travel. The Starbase facility will feature five launch complexes, each equipped with two pads and a propellant farm, along with additional infrastructure to support operations.

As part of the agreement, SpaceX will enter a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement, committing to pay $25 million annually for 25 years, plus an upfront payment of $20 million. This arrangement is expected to generate over $820 million in local payments.

In preparation for the project, SpaceX plans to engage with the local community through town halls to gauge public sentiment regarding the development.
