Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for $7 Billion to Enhance AI Model Routing

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model routing startup, for more than $7 billion. This acquisition transforms Stripe from a payment processor for AI into a comprehensive platform that handles both routing and billing for AI usage.

OpenRouter, which raised $113 million in a Series B funding round in May 2026 at a valuation of $1.3 billion, provides developers with a platform that intelligently routes requests to the most suitable AI model based on various criteria such as cost, speed, and performance. The platform currently offers access to over 400 AI models and serves approximately 8 million users globally.

Prior to the acquisition, Stripe was already processing payments for OpenRouter, and this deal consolidates the routing of AI requests and the billing process into a unified experience. Initial acquisition discussions began around July 23, 2026, with earlier estimates suggesting a potential valuation of around $10 billion. The final price of over $7 billion, while lower than initial projections, still represents a significant premium over OpenRouter's previous valuation.
