Trump Warns Local Opposition to Data Centers Could Hurt US AI Leadership

President Donald Trump expressed concerns on Monday that public opposition to data centers in the United States could jeopardize local economies and weaken the country's standing in the artificial intelligence race. In a social media post, Trump stated, “The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor.” He emphasized that communities supporting data centers could benefit from lower taxes and increased job opportunities.

Trump's remarks come amid a growing backlash against data center projects, which has become a focal point in the upcoming November midterm elections, particularly among Democrats who are highlighting affordability issues. As the political landscape shifts, Trump framed the construction of data centers as a strategic move to counter China's technological influence, noting that “China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement.”

Recent data indicates that at least 48 data center projects, valued at approximately $156 billion, have been stalled or canceled due to local opposition. This trend has intensified, with project cancellations increasing from 6 in 2024 to 25 in 2025, and over 20 more already logged in early 2026. Local opposition groups have surged to 833 across 49 states, driven by concerns over electricity consumption, water usage, noise pollution, and air quality.

In response to the growing resistance, some states, including New York, have implemented moratoriums on new data center proposals, complicating site selection for major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, who are navigating this challenging landscape while pursuing aggressive AI infrastructure expansion plans.
