Ukraine Plans to Triple Drone Strikes Following Deadly Attack Near Kyiv

Ukraine is set to enhance its drone offensive against Russia, escalating its daily long-range drone strikes from more than 300 to 1,000. This announcement was made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 28, following a devastating Russian drone attack that resulted in the deaths of between 27 and 37 civilians in the Kyiv region.

The attack, one of the deadliest in recent months, involved Russian jet-powered Shahed drones targeting areas near the capital, prompting Ukrainian authorities to initiate a criminal investigation into the storage of explosives in residential areas. Zelenskyy cited this tragic event as a justification for the planned increase in drone launches.

The Supreme Commander-in-Chief Staff meeting, which led to this decision, focused on two main objectives: boosting the production of offensive long-range drones and enhancing Ukraine's interceptor capabilities to counter the growing threat from Russian drones. Zelenskyy has framed the expansion of the drone campaign as a form of economic warfare, targeting Russian oil production facilities and military installations to disrupt Moscow's fuel supplies and export revenues.

With the goal of launching approximately one drone every 86 seconds, this operational tempo marks a significant escalation in Ukraine's military strategy. The announcement comes amid ongoing diplomatic activities, including a visit from the US Director of National Intelligence to Moscow, indicating that communication channels between Washington and Moscow remain active despite the US's support for Ukraine.
