US Investigates Apex Logistics for Alleged Nvidia Server Shipments to China

The US government has launched an investigation into Apex Logistics, a Singapore-based freight firm, over its suspected involvement in moving Nvidia-powered AI servers into China. This operation allegedly involved routing the shipments through various Asian locations to evade American export controls.

The inquiry focuses on 47 shipments linked to Super Micro Computer hardware equipped with Nvidia AI chips. These shipments reportedly followed a complex route: components were sent from Taiwan to the US, then redirected across Asia before arriving in Hong Kong and eventually entering mainland China. Apex Logistics has acknowledged awareness of US concerns regarding a “small number of shipments” that may have included materials destined for prohibited locations, though the government's focus on 47 shipments suggests a more significant issue.

Since 2022, the US has tightened export controls on advanced AI chips bound for China, driven by fears that such technology could be used for military purposes. This investigation marks a notable shift in accountability, as Washington appears to be targeting logistics firms that play a crucial role in the supply chain, rather than merely addressing individual shipments.

As the investigation unfolds, Super Micro Computer faces additional challenges, while Nvidia's policy of selling only to established partners raises questions about its vetting processes. For China, these restrictions could hinder access to advanced Western chips, impacting its AI ambitions.
