The initiative, known as "Bitcoin Witsand," was spearheaded by local programmer Edwin Jones and restaurant owner Eldry Hill. Initially slow to gain traction, the project saw a remarkable surge in adoption in 2023, with the number of participating businesses jumping from three to 45.

Local merchants benefit from guaranteed fiat exchange rates, mitigating the volatility risks often associated with cryptocurrency. This model not only facilitates everyday purchases but also enables Bitcoin-denominated loans within the community, fostering a local financial ecosystem.
