Zcash Holders Prepare for Governance Vote Amid 62% Price Surge

Zcash holders are facing a critical deadline today as they prepare for a governance vote that could reshape the cryptocurrency's issuance model and block processing speed. The price of ZEC has surged approximately 62% over the past week, reaching as high as $880 before settling around $830.

The governance process is particularly important as it will determine how new ZEC enters circulation and how quickly the network can process transactions. To qualify for the vote, holders must have spendable shielded ZEC in Ironwood when the blockchain reaches block height 3,459,350, expected around 19:00 UTC on August 24.

Voting will commence on August 25 and run until September 14 at 19:00 UTC. Organizers have stated that for the results to be considered representative, at least 1 million ZEC must participate in the voting process.

• Replacing periodic halvings with a gradual issuance curve while recycling ZEC removed from circulation.
• Voting on when to start returning ZEC removed from circulation through block rewards, with options ranging from immediate to February 2031.
• Reducing the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds to increase the number of blocks produced daily.
• Deciding on the timeline for disabling transactions tied to the deprecated Sprout pool.
• Determining whether to launch NU7 without certain features or delay until all changes are ready.

While this vote serves as a signaling mechanism, any approved proposals will still require development and deployment before becoming part of Zcash's consensus rules.
