In a recent revelation, it has come to light that Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced former CEO of FTX, donated a staggering $610,000 to David Lawrence, the founder of the Labour for the Long Term (LLT) think tank. This transaction occurred in June 2022, just one month prior to LLT's donation of £30,000 (approximately $40,300) to Labour Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, which was used to fund a policy advisor.

According to reports from The Telegraph, Lawrence established the LLT's website on June 20, 2022, and the donation from Bankman-Fried followed shortly thereafter. The connection between Lawrence and Bankman-Fried is believed to have been facilitated by William MacAskill, a prominent figure in the effective altruism movement, which was integral to Bankman-Fried's extensive philanthropic activities during his rise in the crypto world.

Bankman-Fried, who was charged with multiple financial crimes in December 2022 and sentenced to 25 years in prison for misappropriating customer funds, has cast a shadow over the political donations landscape. Unnamed Labour officials have suggested that shadow ministers should refrain from accepting contributions from LLT, although Lawrence has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the funds were directed to charities in the UK.

Despite Lawrence's claims, the timeline raises questions, as the investor he cited as the source for LLT's donation to Streeting reportedly began their contributions only in February 2023, well after the initial donation was made. A Labour spokesperson stated that due diligence checks were conducted prior to accepting the donations, with no issues identified. Streeting's team also confirmed that all proper procedures were followed, and Bankman-Fried's name was not listed among LLT's donors.

This situation unfolds amid ongoing scrutiny of political funding, particularly concerning Nigel Farage's Reform UK party and its connections to the crypto industry.
