Helius CEO Critiques Kraken's Voting Decision in Solana Governance Vote

The Solana network recently conducted its first binding on-chain governance vote, which resulted in significant changes to its economic model. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz has accused Kraken of misunderstanding the implications of its voting behavior, particularly regarding a proposal to double the disinflation rate from 15% to 30%.

The proposal, known as SIMD-0550, was passed with the required two-thirds majority, allowing for a reduction of approximately 18.9 million SOL from projected issuance over the next six years. This change is expected to impact the total supply of SOL, making existing tokens scarcer.

Kraken's involvement became contentious when it initially voted against SIMD-0550, causing a drop in approval rates. However, as the voting period concluded, the proposal managed to regain enough support to pass. Mumtaz's criticism highlights concerns that Kraken's abstention from voting may have inadvertently influenced the outcome of the governance process.

The significance of this vote extends beyond the immediate proposal, marking a shift in how governance decisions are made within the Solana ecosystem. Previously, governance relied on informal consensus; this vote represents a more structured and binding approach.

In addition to SIMD-0550, two other proposals were also voted on, including one related to a fee-burn mechanism, which aims to further tighten SOL's issuance over time. The outcome of these votes could reshape the economic landscape of the Solana network moving forward.
