Iran's IRGC Claims Missile Strike on USS George Washington Amid Pentagon Denial

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has claimed it launched ballistic missiles targeting the USS George Washington, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reports assert that the strike forced the carrier to reposition, framing the action as a response to what Iran perceives as an illegal naval blockade imposed by the United States.

According to Iranian outlets, including Fars News Agency and IRNA, the missile launch occurred on September 5, 2026, and was aimed at multiple U.S. warships in the region. The IRGC's narrative emphasizes that the attack was a direct retaliation against the U.S. military's operations, which Iran refers to as “Project Freedom.”

However, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has categorically denied that any U.S. Navy ships were hit during the incident. They reported no damage or casualties resulting from the missile launches, asserting that American forces successfully evaded the incoming threats. On the same day, U.S. forces targeted three Iranian crude oil tankers, reportedly disabling or destroying them.

The USS George Washington has been deployed in the Arabian Sea since August 2026, following a series of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which have been ongoing since February 2026. The conflict has been marked by military actions from both sides, with the U.S. enforcing sanctions through naval operations while Iran responds with military threats.
