US and UK Execute Historic Joint Military Operation in Space

In a significant development in military space operations, the United States and the United Kingdom have executed their first joint military mission in space. This operation took place from September 4 to 12 and involved a coordinated rendezvous between American and British satellites in geostationary orbit, approximately 35,786 km above Earth.

The timing of the operation was strategic, coinciding with the passage of China's Shiyan 12-01 satellite, which flew roughly 83 km beneath the allied spacecraft. US Space Command maneuvered its surveillance satellite, USA 271, to closely approach the UK’s SKYNET 5A military communications satellite, both traveling at speeds around 11,000 km/h.

This operation was publicly disclosed on September 18, following its completion. UK Space Command officials hailed it as a groundbreaking event for their organization, while commercial tracking firms like Slingshot Aerospace and COMSPOC confirmed the satellites' movements during the operation.

The Context of the Operation

The mission is part of Operation Olympic Defender, a US-led initiative initiated in 2019 aimed at enhancing coordination among allied space operations. This comes in the wake of growing concerns about orbital security, especially after incidents where Russia and China demonstrated their capabilities to create debris fields in space, posing risks to other satellites and the International Space Station.

For the UK, this operation signifies a broader commitment to military activities in space, building on its legacy of secure military communications through the SKYNET satellite constellation since the 1960s. The establishment of the UK Space Command in 2021 further emphasizes this commitment to enhancing military readiness in the space domain.
