Houthi Forces Target Saudi Aramco Facility Amidst Rising Tensions

Yemen’s Houthi forces, known as Ansar Allah, announced a drone strike on Najran Airport in southern Saudi Arabia, framing it as retaliation for Saudi drone activities over Yemen’s Saada and Hajjah governorates. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree declared the strike on August 4, asserting its precision. Saudi authorities have yet to confirm any damage from the Najran operation.

This attack is part of a series of Houthi operations during July and August 2026, coinciding with the unraveling of a UN-brokered truce that had curtailed major combat operations since 2022. Around August 8-9, the Houthis claimed to have targeted a Saudi Aramco refinery in Jazan, which processes approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily. Although Saudi officials acknowledged a fire at the facility, they reported that it was quickly contained with no injuries.

In early August 2026, Saudi Arabia formalized new military cooperation agreements with Turkey and Pakistan, while the Houthis have received military support from Tehran, including drone and missile technology that enables these cross-border strikes. The Jazan refinery, with its significant capacity, is a strategically important target, and any sustained disruption could have repercussions on global energy markets.
