Arizona CEO Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Over $8.8 Million from Employee Benefits

James Vincent Campbell, 49, the CEO of Axim, a company managing benefits for federal contractors, has pleaded guilty to embezzling over $8.8 million from employee health insurance and retirement plans. His plea was secured by federal prosecutors in the District of Maryland.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Campbell misappropriated funds from 2015 to 2024, making unauthorized withdrawals totaling $2.49 million from a master trust account that was supposed to forward payments to insurers and retirement accounts. Instead, he used the money for personal expenses, including big-game hunting trips, taxidermy, jewelry, and gambling.

Furthermore, after relocating Axim to Arizona, Campbell allegedly overcharged clients, sometimes up to five times the legitimate fees. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva emphasized the breach of trust, stating that workers expect their contributions to be secure. Campbell faces a potential five-year prison sentence.
