FIFA Imposes 10-Match Ban on Leandro Paredes Following World Cup Final Brawl

Leandro Paredes, the Boca Juniors midfielder, will not participate in international matches for Argentina in the near future, as FIFA has handed him a 10-match ban following a violent altercation after the 2026 World Cup final. The match, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, ended with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time.

The conflict erupted immediately after the final whistle, with Paredes engaging in physical confrontations with several Spanish players, including Gavi, Rodri, and Dani Olmo. The most severe incident involved Paredes grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat, which FIFA classified as assault. Additionally, he threw Gavi to the ground during the melee.

According to FIFA’s Disciplinary Code, each act of aggression carries a minimum three-match suspension. Paredes faced multiple charges, leading to the significant length of his ban. FIFA has also initiated formal assault proceedings against Argentine defender Nahuel Molina and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, with their sanctions yet to be disclosed.

Despite the international ban, Paredes will continue to play for Boca Juniors in Argentina’s Primera Division, as FIFA’s jurisdiction applies only to international competitions. The aftermath of the final has been particularly challenging for Argentina, as they sought to defend their title after winning in Qatar in 2022. Paredes has the option to appeal the ban through FIFA's internal process, and potentially to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary.
